Our History
-
Monticello, California, was a small farming community in Napa County that was flooded in the 1950s to create Lake Berryessa. The town was submerged following the construction of the Monticello Dam on Putah Creek, part of a large water management project aimed at providing irrigation and drinking water to the region. Before it was lost beneath the lake, Monticello was known for its orchards, ranches, and rural lifestyle. Today, the town’s memory lives on through the lake, which is a popular recreational area and key water reservoir.

The Monticello Rodeo was an annual event held in the small town of Monticello, California, before it was submerged under Lake Berryessa in the 1950s. Known for bringing together local ranchers, cowboys, and community members, the rodeo featured traditional Western competitions like bronc riding, roping, and bull riding. It was a key part of the town’s social life, drawing visitors from surrounding areas to celebrate Monticello’s ranching heritage. The rodeo was a symbol of the town’s vibrant rural culture, which was lost when Monticello was flooded to create the reservoir.
